Margaret's Journey

Abstract from artist's statement: Margaret's Journey is the artist, Monalisa Miller's attempt to recreate the escape route and the people surrounding the historical flight of slaves Margaret Garner and her two-year old daughter from Richwood, KY to cross a frozen Ohio RIver into Cincinnati, OH and freedom.

Even though Margaret and her family reached Ohio, the slaveowner soon caught up with them to retrieve his property. It was then that Margaret killed her daughter and crying out that she would rather her baby dead than returned to slavery. And, it followed a long trial questioning fugitive-slave laws, the meaning of murder, and a mother's love.
